Impact Of Fees On Your Retirement Portfolio

5/24/2017

It's not just me "pounding the table" about the effect fees have on one's portfolio over the years.

Below is a link to an article speaking very frankly to stock brokers and advisers about fees charged to portfolios and the impact those fees have on their clients' retirement accounts over a period of 25 years...

To quote the article - "...to put it bluntly, it’s huge."

Here's the link:
 https://www.onwallstreet.com/news/the-stunning-impact-of-fund-fees-on-a-retirement-portfolio

Compare that to a Fixed Index Annuity, which has exactly 0.0% annual fees, as in "zero, zippo, nada"...

Just sayin...

Bum Phillips and My Father

5/23/2017

Check out the pictures below - the top picture is the 1937 basketball team from Edwards Elementary School in Beaumont, TX.

Bum is the 6th player from the left (notice he's the only one in "street" shoes (lol!))  My father, Dan Dennis, is the 9th player from the left.  They ended up going to school together until graduation from high school.  Bum was voted "most likely to succeed" and my father ended up being the class valedictorian... (no, it didn't transfer to me lol!)

Fast-forward to 2007 - 70 years after the picture of the basketball team - I took my dad to see Bum in Port Neches - (Bum was autographing one of his books) - they hadn't see each other since graduation from high school...  what a great day - don't know who was happier to see the other guy - Bum or my father...

If you loved Bum from the Oilers' "Luv Ya Blue" days, I thought you might like this little bit of nostalgia from "way back when."

Just Sayin...

Take a look at the chart above of the Dow Jones over the past 5 days - "the market giveth and the market taketh away."

Today it "took away" 372 points, or 1.78%...

As a refresher for anyone reading this blog, here are some things to consider right now:
  • The time to get car insurance is before you have an accident
  • The time to get homeowner's insurance is before your house burns down
  • The time to get out of Galveston is before the hurricane comes ashore
And, ladies and gentlemen, the time to get your life savings insured, protected and guaranteed against loss is BEFORE THE STOCK MARKET CRASHES.

Here's the problem - everyone knows, deep down, that the stock market is not designed to protect their money, but they leave their money in there anyway - it's my belief that many people don't know they have a choice.

They know another financial "hurricane" is coming eventually, similar to 2008-2009,  but it's just easier to be complacent than to be proactive, take action and protect their money

So here's a "Plan B" - here's something for you to consider - it's an idea you may not have thought about doing or didn't know that you could do...

Since the stock market has moved higher over the past several months, have you ever thought about "taking some of the chips off the table," i.e. taking a part of your nest egg that you cannot afford to lose, moving it "out of harm's way" and literally insuring it against loss?

Right now, your account's value is higher right now than it was a year ago but it still hasn't been "locked in" and actually captured, has it?

At some point in the future, we both know the market will head down and, because your account in the stock market is not insured against loss, you and I both know what's gonna happen - your account will give back its gains - it' ain't gonna be pretty and you're not gonna like it...

We both know it's coming... it's not a matter of "if," we all know it's a matter of "when."
It happened to you in 2000-2001 and again in 2008-2009...

So this time, make the decision to be proactive, get out there ahead of the approaching "hurricane" and at least get part of your money protected.

What's required to make this happen?  The "stroke of a pen."

What is the cost to make this happen?  A big, fat $0...

A Personal Note From Rick

5/11/2017

Relax... - this blog posting truly is a personal note - it has nothing to do with money or financial security - it's about a 50 year anniversary that will arrive in 2 days, on May 13, 2017...

I've been anticipating and dreading this date as it moved closer, and I've been wondering what I would do when it arrived.  Well, the date is here and I've decided...

I'm going to let the world know about my brother and hero, Dan Michael Dennis:

50 years ago, on May 13, 1967, my only sibling, my idol, my older brother and "kick-ass" United States Marine, was killed in action (KIA) in South Vietnam.  He was 21 yrs old.  I was only 11 yrs old, in 6th grade and living in southwest Houston.

For his efforts that day, he was posthumously awarded the Silver Star - I've uploaded a copy of it - after 50 years , it still hurts to read it...  here it is:

Also, I'm running an "obit" in the Port Arthur News on May 13, 2017 - Dan graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur in 1964, so I thought his classmates that are still living in the Port Arthur area might see it and remember him.

Here's a link to a very simple website I maintain in his honor.  If you feel so inspired, please visit the website:

Finally - if you're a veteran, I thank you for your service.  If you're related to a veteran, please let that veteran know a random guy (that would be me) thanks them for their service.

And, if you feel so inclined, please say a prayer for my brother and all our veterans who gave their lives for our country.

Thanks for letting me share this with you...

Sincerely,

Rick Dennis

What Is Your Risk Tolerance?

5/9/2017

Here are two questions I ask every person or couple on an initial interview:
  1. "What is the purpose of your money?  What do you want it to do for you?"
  2. "What is your risk tolerance, i.e. are you OK with your money being "at risk" in the stock market?"
For most people, the "purpose of their money" is to finance their retirement, i.e. they're wanting a monthly "paycheck' for the rest of their lives.  And, for most people, they are NOT OK with their money being "at risk" - in fact, they want just the opposite!

The slide below sums up the "risk tolerance" scale - products where your money IS at risk versus products where your money IS NOT at risk.

All you have to do is decide where you are on that scale.

Picture
If you're OK with risk and not worried about losing money in the market during your retirement, then a financial product that eliminates that risk is not what you want.

But, if the purpose of your money is to finance your retirement, and you don't want to lose ANY of your money if the market crashes, then call me or send me an email and I'll personally help you "get your money SAFE!"

Your "Dream" Retirement Plan

5/8/2017

Is your retirement plan "behaving itself," i.e. is it really doing what you want it to do?

Here's the reason I ask - most people want their retirement plans (their 401(k) and IRA accounts) to do 4 very specific things, but the plans they have do exactly the opposite of what they want...

But even though their plans ARE NOT doing what they want, most people continue to just "put up" with their retirement plans because they don't know they have a choice.

Well, guess what???  They do have a choice!

We all want choices - we all like to "pick and choose" when we go to a restaurant, and we also want choices when we're planning our retirement.

But most people aren't given any choices about their retirement plans - they end up being "stuck" with the retirement plan they inherit from their employer...

If your retirement plan isn't doing what you want and you're "ticked off" about it, take a couple of minutes, check out this "whiteboard" video and "see what's possible..."

The Market Giveth & The Market Taketh Away...

5/3/2017

Picture
Since the market's at an all-time high, here's a concept - "lock in" your gains, move your nest egg - your life savings - out of the stock market and literally insure it against any losses in the future...

You and I both know what's going to happen eventually in the stock market, and it's not gonna be pretty...

Think about this - you have homeowner's insurance in case your house burns down, but your nest egg - your life savings, your financial "house" - isn't insured and guaranteed against loss???

After all - "what could possibly go wrong???"
